The FCCLA Community Service program guides students to develop, plan, carry out, and evaluate projects that improve the quality of life in their communities. Community Service helps young people build skills for family, career, and community roles; provides youth-centered learning experiences related to Family and Consumer Sciences education; and encourages young people to develop the positive character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Community Service projects can be a great “first step” for less-experienced advisers, chapters, or members. They involve fun, hands-on activities that motivate and involve students while offering a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. Projects range from simple, one-time efforts to multi-faceted, ongoing programs. Here’s an example of the range of projects that might grow out of a single concern – to clean up the community.
See what FCCLA Chapters are doing in their communities... New York FCCLA members traveled to New York City’s Grand Central Terminal for Sandra Lee’s World’s Largest Bake Sale. As always, Sandra thinks big and she did an amazing job recruiting Emeril Lagasse, Duff Goldman, Mario Batali and Rosanna Scotta (Good Day NY Co-Anchor) to help her at the event. Thirty restaurants came armed with baked goods to sell and there was a constant crowd all day – to the extent that they had a line out to the street the majority of the day and had to let people in as others were leaving to keep up with the fire codes! I would guess 1200+ people attended and even the well stocked vendors began selling out at 3 pm! Sandra made two appearances with press present both times including EXTRA, ET and lots of local NY press as well. She was great about mentioning Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry and/or the Great American Bake Sale. Funds raised from the Grand Central event went to the NY Food Bank but Sandra also recruited 50+ bakers across the nation to host bake sales for Share Our Strength in their communities as well.
Please email progawards@fcclainc.org if your chapter is doing a project that you would like posted on the national FCCLA website. Awards:
